Exercise 1 – Reply to an email

You have recently joined an English course in your town. Your friend Sarah has sent you an email asking about your experience.

Read Sarah’s email and write a reply.

«Hi! I heard that you’ve recently started an English course. I’d love to know what it’s like. What made you decide to join the course? What are your classes like? Are you enjoying them? I’m thinking about taking an English course myself, so I’d also like to know if you would recommend it.

Write soon!
Sarah»

Your task

Write an email to Sarah. In your email:

  • explain why you decided to join the course;
  • describe what your classes are like;
  • say whether you would recommend the course and explain why.

Try to write around 150–180 words.

Model answer

«Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your email. It’s great to hear from you!

I decided to join the course because I wanted to improve my English before applying for a new job. I had been studying on my own for a while, but I felt that I needed more opportunities to practise speaking.

The classes are quite interesting because we do a variety of activities. We usually work on grammar and vocabulary, but we also have discussions and speaking activities. What I particularly like is that the teacher encourages us to express our opinions and gives us useful feedback.

As for whether I would recommend it, I definitely would. The atmosphere is friendly, and I’ve already noticed an improvement in my confidence when speaking English.

Let me know if you decide to join!

Best,
Anna»

Exercise 2 – Giving advice

Your friend Daniel is planning to spend a month abroad to improve his English. He has written to you because he is not sure where to go or how to prepare for the experience. Read his email and write a reply.

«Hi!

I’m really excited because I’ve decided to spend a month abroad this summer to improve my English. However, I’m not sure where I should go or what I should do before travelling. Have you ever studied English abroad? Where would you recommend going?

I’d also like to make the most of the experience and improve my English as much as possible. Do you have any advice? Thanks!
Daniel»

Your task

Write an email to Daniel. In your email:

  • recommend a destination and explain your choice;
  • give him some advice about preparing for the trip;
  • suggest ways of improving his English while he is abroad.

Try to write around 150–180 words.

Model answer

«Hi Daniel,

It sounds like a great idea! I’m sure spending a month abroad will be a really useful experience.

If I were you, I would choose Ireland because you could practise English every day and there are plenty of interesting places to visit. Another advantage is that people there are generally very friendly and welcoming.

Before you go, I would recommend booking your accommodation in advance and making a list of the things you need to take with you. It might also be a good idea to revise some useful vocabulary before travelling, especially expressions for everyday situations.

While you are there, try to speak English as much as possible. Instead of spending all your time with other Spanish speakers, try to meet local people or join activities where you can practise the language.

I hope you have a fantastic time! Let me know how it goes.

Best wishes,
Anna»

💡 How can you check your writing?

«I am a B2 English learner. Please check my writing and help me improve it. Check my grammar, vocabulary, spelling, connectors, organisation and whether I have answered all the points in the task. Do not rewrite the whole text immediately. First, identify my mistakes and explain them clearly. Then give me an improved version of my text.»

De esta forma, no solo podrás ver una versión corregida, sino también entender tus errores y aprender de ellos.

Remember

Cuando escribas un email en inglés, intenta:

  • responder a todos los puntos de la tarea;
  • organizar las ideas en párrafos;
  • utilizar conectores;
  • variar el vocabulario y las estructuras gramaticales;
  • adaptar el tono al destinatario;
  • revisar tu texto antes de terminar.

Y recuerda: no necesitas utilizar exactamente las mismas frases que aparecen en los modelos. Utiliza las expresiones como punto de partida y adáptalas a lo que quieras decir.
